On Thursday, May 19th, the McCormick Library will offer an evening program for adults about the benefits of using native plants in the home landscape. Master gardener Judy Kirkland will talk about the importance of pollinators and other insects that benefit from these plants. Everyone will learn how to make their yard part of a healthy ecosystem. The program starts at 6 pm. Light refreshments provided. Attendees will receive free packets of wildflower seeds native to the southeast.
Judy Kirkland, a retired teacher and horticulturist, is also the owner of Asclepias and More, a backyard nursery dedicated to educating gardeners on the importance of native plants, pollinators, and other beneficial insects. Judy completed her horticulture training at Augusta Technical College and completed three programs through the National Garden Club certifying her as a consultant in Landscape Design, Environmental Studies, and Gardening Studies.
This program is made possible by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in conjunction with Tangled Bank Studios and PBS/Nature. With help from the McCormick Garden Club, this grant will also fund the establishment of a native wildflower garden at the library.
