All aboard! That was the call in the 1930s when a dam was put in and the Dorn Bridge was completed on the Savannah River. There is still a road in McCormick County called Chamberlain’s Ferry Road. It is now a dead end.

Dr. Steve Luking, whose grandfather ran the ferry, has published a book called “Last Ride on Chamberlain’s Ferry.” It is available now in Books On Main at 100 N. Main St. in downtown McCormick.

Luking will be at The McCormick County Library at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 16, where he will tell stories and conduct a book signing. Many paintings in the book and on the cover were done by local artist Leonard Jones.

Luking will talk about dismantling and moving a circus from McCormick to Lincolnton, when the elephants refused to get on the ferry and the animals waded across the Savannah River.

Luking lives in North Carolina, but his grandparents still live in Lincolnton.

All are invited to hear and enjoy Luking. Refreshments will be served.
